Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

First-Time Sellers & Common Questions

What do I need to bring to sell scrap at Roxbury Recycling?

All customers must be at least 17 years old and must provide a valid state-issued ID. Customers will need to have their ID scanned and sign a declaration stating they are authorized to sell their material. Ferrous material cannot be brought in cars; it must arrive in a larger vehicle (truck, van, or SUV). All vehicles must have a valid license plate. No walk-ins without a vehicle are accepted.

What’s the difference between non-ferrous and ferrous metals?

Non-ferrous metals are non-magnetic and do not stick to a magnet. Examples include copper, aluminum, and brass. Ferrous metals are magnetic and will stick to a magnet. Examples include steel and iron. Generally, non-ferrous metals are more valuable when scrapping.

Do you take aluminum cans?

What is the difference between brass and copper?

Brass has a yellowish color, while copper has a reddish color. If you are unsure, take a file and scratch the surface—if it appears red, it is copper; if yellow, it is brass. Brass is an alloy composed of copper and zinc, making it more durable.

What is the difference between #1, #2, and #3 copper?

#1 Copper: Clean, uncoated copper tubing or wire with no brass fittings, insulation, paint, or solder.
#2 Copper: May have small brass fittings, solder, or paint, which makes it worth less.
#3 Copper (Roofing Copper): Often contains tar, adhesives, or other contaminants, making it the least valuable.

Does Roxbury Recycling buy old pools?

Yes. If your pool is made of aluminum, we will pay for it based on the dirty aluminum price due to paint and attachments. If your pool contains steel, separate it to maximize your profits.

Does Roxbury Recycling accept old fences?

Yes, we accept metal fences. Use a magnet test to determine whether your fence is made of aluminum, steel, or iron. Aluminum fences will receive a higher scrap price if you remove any steel nails or screws attached to them.

How can I make more money scrapping?

• Separate your metals – Ferrous metals like steel and iron are worth less than non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminum, and brass.
• Use a magnet – A magnet will help you distinguish between ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
• Remove unnecessary materials – Clean your scrap by removing plastic, rubber, and other non-metal attachments to increase value.
